§ 02 · The Essentials

What ipl treats.

Lumecca treats:

  • Sun damage + spots (freckles, age spots, lentigines on face, neck, chest, hands)
  • Rosacea + redness (diffuse facial redness and vascular flushing)
  • Vascular lesions (telangiectasia (broken capillaries), cherry angiomas, small vessels)
  • Pigmented lesions (uneven tone, post-inflammatory marks)
  • Photo-aging (overall skin tone and clarity)
§ 02 · How it works

How it works.

IPL (intense pulsed light) uses a broad-spectrum flash of light that targets both melanin (pigmentation) and hemoglobin (vascular). The selected lesions absorb the light and break down; the surrounding skin is unaffected. Lumecca is notable for its high fluence, meaning fewer sessions are needed to see dramatic results.

Pigmented spots temporarily darken (turning coffee-coloured) after treatment, then flake off over 3–7 days. Vascular lesions gradually fade over 2–4 weeks. Full results typically visible at 4 weeks, with most clients needing 1–3 sessions total.

What it won't do

IPL targets color, it won't tighten laxity or treat texture concerns like scarring. For tightening, we use Forma or Morpheus8. For surface texture and fine lines, microneedling or peels. IPL is the fastest tool for color issues specifically.

Good fit

This is likely for you if…

  • You have sun damage, age spots, or pigmentation on face, neck, chest, or hands
  • You have diffuse facial redness or rosacea flushing
  • You want results quickly (1–3 sessions instead of 6+)
  • You're Fitzpatrick I–IV and have no recent sun exposure
  • You can avoid the sun for 2 weeks after each session
Not a fit

This is not for you if…

  • You've been in the sun or tanning in the last 2 weeks
  • You're Fitzpatrick V–VI, IPL has a higher risk for pigmented skin; we'd recommend Lumecca alternatives or different tools
  • You have melasma (melasma responds unpredictably to IPL, we'd need a careful plan)
  • You're on photosensitizing medications (doxycycline, isotretinoin, St John's Wort)
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding

Day ofThe appointment

Cleanse, apply gel, place protective eyewear. Flash per area feels like a snapped rubber band with warmth. 20 min for face. Finish with soothing cream and SPF. Mild redness immediately after, settles in 1–2 hours.

ii.

Days 3–7Pigment darkens then flakes

This is the expected and desired reaction. Spots temporarily darken (look like coffee grounds on the surface) and then naturally slough off over 3–7 days. Do not scrub, let it happen.

iii.

Weeks 2–4Visible clearing

Once the pigment has flaked off, you'll see dramatically clearer skin. Vascular redness continues to fade for 2–4 weeks as vessels reabsorb. Full results at 4–6 weeks.

For most pigmentation and rosacea, 1–3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart. Stubborn deep pigmentation or significant vascular work may need a fourth.
Yes, this is expected. Pigmented spots darken within minutes to hours after treatment, then flake off over 3–7 days. If they didn't darken, the treatment wouldn't have targeted them.
Lumecca is safer for darker skin than older IPL systems but still carries some risk for Fitzpatrick V–VI. We assess in consultation and may use an alternative (Nd:YAG or pigment-specific creams) for darker tones.
Mild. Most clients describe it as a quick rubber-band snap with a warm sensation. Cooling gel and contact cooling help. No numbing usually needed.
We prefer fall/winter because sun exposure before or after is riskier. If you must do it in summer, you need to be disciplined about SPF 50 and sun avoidance for 2 weeks post-treatment.
Melasma is tricky, it can improve or worsen with IPL. We usually avoid IPL as a first-line treatment for melasma and use topicals, chemical peels, or combinations instead.
